In our feature interview today we meet a former teacher of outdoor education who continues to share his passion for the outdoors with children. When Gig Keirstead retired he and his wife started an outdoors centre in New Brunswick called Elmhurst Outdoors. They provide maple sugar tours and meals, groomed x-c ski trails and outdoor education programs for schools. Gig talks about how important it is to get kids connected to the natural world again by doing things like building snow houses.
Listeners have wondered where Lorne Blagdon and his Trail Magic series disappeared to. Well he’s back with another tale from the Appalachian Trail. Lorne and his daughter hiked the full trail from Georgia to Maine a few years ago. He has another hiking adventure to share with us.
Also on the podcast… comments about last weeks free advice on free-heel skiing, podsafe music from Pl@stic Soul, terrific outdoor podcasts from The Outdoors Station and squiggly ski tracks through the tombstones. Next week on the show… rock climbing and bouldering in Australia.

Lorne is back! Yessss.. When first finding this podcast on itunes, I downloaded my first few episodes not seeking recent episodes, or even consecutive, but rather, the episodes which included those wonderful words “trail magic” in their description. After listening to them, I liked the podcast, and of course, Trail Magic, but couldnt help but notice, I missed some installments. So I got all of them! and haven’t looked back. But I have listened back, to several episodes more than once. And I got to hear all the Trail Magic series. Good stuff. And sweet, Itunes just finished downloading Episode 38. Talk to you soon Lorne, sort of. Thanks Gary

Hi Gary,
Thanks ever so for the mention in your show, which I’ve heard for the first time today! Great to see others working to the same outdoor ethos and high production values, which I’m sure will encourage people to appreciate and enjoy their surroundings more.
Just got to download all your episodes now and plug myself in to the Canadian outdoor world! Your listeners might also be interested in my other 160 podcasts stored over at a different feed at http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk!
I think I’ve done 230 odd now in total, not sure as I’ve lost count!
We must do a link up and share some topics in 2008!
All the best and congratulations on the show.
Bob
